Facial nerve (Nervus facialis)

Pain in the facial region can also be caused by the facial nerve. Originating in the brain stem, it winds its way along various paths to the parotid gland and from here radiates into the facial muscles that make our facial expressions possible. It is also involved in controlling the muscles of the eyes, forehead, nose, cheek and mouth. This explains the possible connection to facial pain, which always occurs on one side when this nerve is involved.

If the patient feels this pain and additional symptoms occur, a specialist examination should be carried out quickly. These can be, for example

• Reddened conjunctiva
• Constricted pupil
• Lacrimation
• nasal congestion or runny nose
• Swollen or drooping eyelid
• facial sweating

Based on the patient's medical history, the results of the examination and the
